Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many pills will my placenta make?
This varies greatly depending on the size of your placenta and the method used. I use the traditional method of preparation and it typically yields less since steaming shrinks the size of the placenta. You can expect to receive between 60-120+ capsules from me.
How should I store my capsules?
Capsules produced from the TCM method (steaming/dehydrating) can be stored in a cool, dry and dark cupboard. Some prefer the refrigerator or the freezer for storage (specifically folks who have done the raw method). If you choose to store in the fridge, I’ve included a food-safe silica gel Dry and Dry packet to keep moisture from affecting your capsules. If you choose to store your jar in a cupboard instead, you can remove the silica packet. For high humidity homes (those who use humidifiers, etc), I suggest keeping your silica packet in the jar regardless.
How many capsules should I take?
You can start with 1-2 capsules a day and increase to 1-2 capsules 3x a day. Some try the 3-2-1 method (3 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, 1 at night). The beauty of placenta capsules is that this is not an exact science — YOU can individualize it to meet your unique needs. Just be mindful: if you do take them later in the day, you might increase your chance of having more energy than you’d like in the evening.
Listen to your body. If you feel the desire to increase the number, increase. If you feel the need to take less, take less. You can skip days or skip weeks if you’re feeling good without them. The dosage varies and is unique to you and your placenta!
A small percentage of people report mild reflux or “burping” after taking their capsules. Papaya (or other digestive) enzymes taken along with your capsules might help to avoid or lessen this symptom. You can also take with or without food, but I suggest with food - even if it’s just a snack like some applesauce or yogurt.
Why are my capsules powdery?
You may notice your capsules have a light dusting of placenta powder at the bottom of the jar — this is from the encapsulation machine. I use cotton rounds to collect the powder, but I may miss some. Most don’t mind this, but if it taste’s too iron-y, you can wipe off the excess powder before taking your capsules.
Are there any potential side effects?
Each individual, and their placenta, is unique. Your experience will be unique to you. While many appreciate “the lift” in mood, some report feeling too energized by the capsules and would rather feel more restful during the first days and weeks postpartum. As always, even if your placenta pills give you a boost in energy, remember that to rest and nest is essential during the first weeks and months postpartum.
Please note: If you experience any unpleasant side effects, discontinue use and seek medical advice.
When should I not take my placenta capsules?
In TCM, placenta pills are said to add heat to the body and it is NOT advised to take your capsules when you feel unwell (cold, flu, etc), are feverish, or have an infection (such as mastitis).
*Capsules can have a subtle scent. Most report a mild metallic or earthy scent, similar to iron pills. The gelatin capsules used also have a unique scent. Most do not mind it, but if there is ever a strong odor coming from your capsules and it turns you off, always trust your nose.
Do not take your capsules if you are pregnant.
How long will they last?
Most finish their capsules in less than 6 months. If stored properly, I recommend consuming within a year, but many save theirs for menopause. You can also freeze your capsules to extend the shelf life.
Be mindful of washing your hands before and after handling your placenta capsules, and avoid leaving the jar open.
How do I use the AfterBirth Essence (placenta tincture)?
To start, your placenta tincture can be used in times of stress, anxiety and emotional lows. Some use their tincture once per day in the first weeks postpartum. The following is for both the raw and processed preparations.
Gently shake the bottle before use. Place 1-4 drops under the tongue, or in water, juice or tea.
I use small-batch, hand-crafted Icelandic vodka for placenta tinctures.
If stored in a cool dry place, your tincture should last indefinitely.
The raw preparation can be discarded after 3-6 months. Some use a saline preparation, and some use an alcohol-based preparation. I tend to use alcohol to extend the shelf life unless you request an alternative.
How do I use my placenta salve?
Your placenta salve can be used on most skin irritations or minor wounds, or just as a soothing balm as desired. Start with a small amount (a little goes a long way). Many people find that it helps soothe a healing perineum or cesarean incision after birth (please only apply after the incision has healed, or 2-4 weeks after the birth) and can be used on your baby's diaper area (this is a well-loved use for many).
Every element used in the crafting of your salves or ointments is organic, sustainably-sourced and safe to use on baby. My basic preparation includes your powdered placenta, olive oil, beeswax, vitamin E oil, calendula oil, and arnica oil (unless otherwise stated on the salve tin).
Please note: Placenta salve is not recommended as a nipple balm while nursing. If interested, I offer handmade balms specific for nipple healing and support. If you DO use it as a nipple balm, be sure to wash your nipples thoroughly before nursing.
What about my chocolate truffles?
A truffle a day is a sweet and nourishing postpartum treat. Some begin their morning with one, some save it for an afternoon pick-me-up. Each truffle contains approximately 1/2 gram of your placenta powder. I offer this seasonally (in the Fall and Winter months).
